Youth Workshops
LightBox has developed a series of after-school workshops for teens, using collaborative theatre arts activities to promote food awareness and advocacy skills.
Our 6-week pilot workshop at Jane Addams High School in the Bronx, in partnership with Urban Health Plan, exceeded all expectations. The students received a standing ovation after their final performance for their peers, and according to surveys, students’ favorite parts of the workshop included “laughing and having fun while creating awesome art,” “being able to open up and work as a team,” and “EVERYTHING!!!!!”
We are now working with multiple high schools and community-based organizations to share the workshops with other teens throughout the 5 boroughs.
In July we held a week-long workshop with our good friends at the Lower Eastside Girls Club. The girls, who were ages 7-12, worked hard, had a lot of fun, and produced excellent results. Now LightBox is working with Urban Health Plan’s Club TIA for a three week period, and has several more Bronx workshops scheduled for the fall.

The Food Theater Project Youth Workshops train teachers and students to research, write, produce, and present their own food-based plays to their communities. Workshops utilize the LightBox Approach, a system of physical theatre-making that teaches the art of collaboration and is drawn from movement techniques from Asia, Europe, South America, and the United States.

LightBox professional theatre artists conduct these month-long workshops with 12-15 students each, in an intimate and intensive learning environment. LightBox facilitators mentor the students through the process of writing and performing their own plays about their experiences with food, which they then perform for their communities.
Participants will not only be shifting their own perceptions of the food they consume, but will also become informed advocates for healthy, local food for their families and communities.
